My web site is nearly ready,
so how do I make money from it?
The business model we use relies on three methods
of revenue generation: advertisements, affiliate links
and e-commerce. They are covered in more detail in
each of the sections below.
Advertising
There are a number of ways to earn money for your
web business by hosting adverts on your site. Certain
companies will pay you for 'leads' (potential online
customers) that you direct from your site to theirs
via an advert (in the form of an image which is called
a banner - and which is also a html link). This form
of advertising is more commonly referred to as an
affiliate scheme. Another method of using adverts
for revenue generation is to sign-up for one of the
main online advertising systems. Google AdSense is
an excellent place to start. You register initially,
choose the type of banner you want, they send you
some html code, you insert it into your web pages
and then when a potential customer visits your site
they will see adverts with content that is relevant
to your site. Google ads actually scan your site before
the ads are loaded and only adverts that are deemed
connected in scope to your site will be displayed..
it is a great idea and can be very profitable. Click
here to read more about AdSense and to signup
for it if you want to (it is free).
Affiliate schemes
This method allows you to personally choose individual
banners (advertising images/links) to host on your
site. You choose the type of banner, the colour, layout,
style (skyscraper, block etc) and you can really make
it fit into the look of your site, as well as only
allowing relevant adverts which you directly aim at
your target market. For instance rather than having
generic adverts on Lawnmowers for a web site dedicated
to Yachting, you can choose to only include adverts
that deal with marine products.. your revenue generation
is a lot better for targeted adverts than for generic
ones. However, you will not necessarily get paid for
every click a visitor to your site makes on the advert..
more likely than not you will subscribe to an affiliate
scheme that will pay a commission on whatever sales
occur as a result of that visitor linking to the advertisers
site. This can be extremely profitable if you direct
many paying visitors through your affiliate advertising
link. Often commissions can be quite high, 30% is
common and even 50% is not unusual, it depends on
the company offering the service and the conditions
of your affiliate scheme. See the links below to view
good affiliate schemes and follow the online instructions
(Note: a good scheme is one that is legal, gives a
good product and offers you good stats on your earnings
- don't go for the highest commission just for the
sake of it, see the bigger picture and tailor the
adverts to your target market).
E-Commerce
Ok, a little bit more involved. See
e-commerce explained for a description of the
technical challenges you will face getting an e-commerce
site up and running. You need to have an idea of the
products you wish to sell or perhaps even consider
reselling; either way do your research and treat the
business a lot more formally. Follow the links below
